Turkmen or Türkmençe [/tyɾkmɛntʃɛ/] is a natural language which has its origins in Turkmenistan (ISO 3166: TM) and is its official language.


It is an Oghuz Turkic language (639-5: trk). Its closest living neighbors are Azerbaijani and Khorasani . It is also related to other Oghuz and Turkic languages, most notably Turkish , Uzbek , Kazakh , Kyrgyz and Tatar

It is the one of the oldest Oghuz languages, and the most widely spoken Eastern Oghuz language. It is typically written in Latin script, but was widely written with Cyrillic script until 1992.
