Azerbaijani, Azeri or Azərbaycanca is a natural language which was developed in the Transcaucasia region of Eurasia.

It is an Oghuz Turkic language (639-5: trk) and is believed to originally have originated from some form of the Tatar language . Its closest living neighbors are Turkish and Gagauz . It is also related to other Oghuz and Turkic languages, most notably Turkmen , Uzbek , Kazakh , and Kyrgyz

It shares high mutual intelligibility with Turkish, which leads many to believe it is a dialect, though, the Grammar and phonetics of Azerbaijani are unique and different from Turkish.

It is notable for its usage of the schwa (ə) character, a representation of the phoneme /æ/. This sound is either unwritten or represented as ä in other Turkic languages. There are two main dialects, Northern, and Southern, with the Northern variant being spoken mostly in the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the southern variant being spoken in Northern Iran
